Michigan judge reprimands "idiot" who entered virtual arraignment under profane display name
A judge in Michigan was not entertained when a man joined a live Zoom arraignment on May 11 under a profane name. St. Joseph County District Court Chief Judge Jeffrey Middleton was presiding over a virtual arraignment on Tuesday when a man joined the call with the name “Buttf***er3000.”
The judge asked the man for his name, which he gave as Nathaniel Saxton.
Middleton pressed, “Your name’s not Butt f***er 3000? … What kind of idiot logs into court like that? What’s your name again?”
Saxton denied typing “anything like that” and tried to apologize to the court. Before moving onto the next case, Middleton said, “I’m going to put you in the waiting room. You can sit in limbo for a while and think about what you call yourself online.”

Audette v. L'Union St. Joseph | 59 N.E. 668 (1901)
A contract condition is an uncertain event that must occur before the promisor can be obligated to perform. If the condition doesn’t occur, the promisor has no duty to perform. But what if the condition depends on the act of a nonparty who refuses to act? In that case, can the promisee compel the promisor to perform even though the condition didn’t occur? The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court provides an answer in Audette versus L’Union St. Joseph.

Kern v. St. Joseph’s Hospital | 697 P.2d 135 (1985)
Statutes of limitations tend to be hard and absolute bars to recovery. Yet many such statutes may be subject to tolling or other circumstances that extend them. The court in Kern versus St. Joseph’s Hospital, Incorporated examined one such equitable principle.
In nineteen seventy seven, Dale Kern, suffering from bladder cancer, received external beam radiation at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Albuquerque. Doctor Doyle Simmons, a radiation oncologist at X Ray Associates, informed Dale that he’d receive thirty treatments. But Simmons discontinued treatments after Dale received twenty five. Simmons didn’t respond when Dale asked why. Thereafter, Dale experienced difficulty while urinating and had blood in his urine and stool.
In nineteen eighty one, Dale and his wife Danny read a newspaper article claiming that St. Joseph’s Hospital had administered excessive dosages of radiation to a number of patients. Both suspected that Dale might also have been overdosed. They hired a lawyer to investigate whether Dale’s radiation therapy had been properly administered. Dale died of sepsis and bladder cancer in nineteen eighty two.
In nineteen eighty three, Danny Kern, Dale’s widow and administrator, sued the hospital, Doctor Simmons, and X Ray Associates, alleging that Dale’s death resulted from the negligent administration of radiation. Simmons and X Ray Associates filed a motion for summary judgment, arguing that the lawsuit was barred by New Mexico’s three year statute of limitations. Danny presented the affidavit of a radiation oncologist stating that the dosage that Dale received was excessive and would’ve caused the complications that Dale suffered. The doctor also asserted that whoever calculated the treatment dosages and radiation exposure times made a gross calculation error.
Despite the affidavit, the trial court granted summary judgment to Simmons and X Ray Associates. The court of appeals affirmed, and the New Mexico Supreme Court granted Danny Kern’s cert petition.

Joseph.
Louis Audette died, and the administrator of his estate, Malvina Audette, attempted to collect his sick benefits from insurance company L’Union St. Joseph. Under L’Union’s bylaws, it wouldn’t pay out sick benefits until the insured provided a sworn certificate from a doctor. But Louis’s doctor refused to sign the certificate because of his religious beliefs against making oaths. Audette then sued L’Union to recover the sick benefits.
The trial court found in L’Union’s favor, and Audette appealed to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
